Gel Nails

, Author: Miriam

One of the reasons gel nails are so popular is because they last so long! They are also a bit more flexible than Acrylics.

When done properly, gel nails should last between 3 and 4 weeks, until the first refill is due.

A small insight into the process:

First, a nail tip is applied if the length of the nails needs to be extended. Then two to three layers of gel nail polish are applied, with each layer being cured under a UV lamp. The nail is then filed and polished with the desired color.

Do’s and Don’ts:

  • Always disinfect your hands and remove any residues from the nails before doing your nails.
  • In contrast to the French Manicure, hands and nails should not soak in water before doing a gel manicure.
  • Don’t apply cuticle oil or moisturizer to your nails before the process, as this would affect the bonding of the artificial nails.

What you should know:

Gel nails are cured under a UV lamp. Now you might think, what, isn’t UV light harmful to the skin or even cancer-causing?

Fact is, the potency of UV light used in our UV lamps  is very low, it is exactly 32 watts. For comparison: The radiation emitted by the sun is about 700 watts.

Modern UV devices are safe and do not cause cancer.

If you want to protect your skin from the UV light anyway, you can apply sunscreen to your hands (leave out the nails) 20 minutes before you start doing your nails, or wear gloves with cut off fingertips.
